CLAR VILLAGE ENHANCEMENT - GREENORE AMENITY RIVER WALK PROJECT

CLÁR (Ceantair Laga Árd-Riachtanais) is a Programme for Revitalising Rural Areas, funded through the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and the National Development Plan.  The objective of the CLAR programme is to fast-track National Development Plan funding into areas of depopulation and rural decline.   The Cooley Peninsula has been identified as an area requiring this approach. Aspects of the CLAR programme are being administered through Louth LEADER.

LEADER has worked closely with Louth County Council towards improving the environmental presentation of the local area while also improving the quality of life of the people of Cooley.  Funding of €90,000 per annum has been made available through CLAR, LEADER and Louth County Council for various village enhancement projects.  As part of the CLAR initiative, Louth LEADER and Louth County Council committed funding to the villages of Omeath, Carlingford and Greenore.

At Greenore, the funding and support will make a huge difference, as James Larkin told us: "We are delighted that our proposed project has been selected under the CLAR, Village enhancement initiative, being administered through Louth LEADER. The project consists of a footpath and landscaping of a river in Greenore. The amenity walk is a stand-alone project but will also connect a number of other trails around the village, including our proposed Sli Na Slainte route. The footpath section of the project will also provide a safe pedestrian access to the village and to Father Keegan Park, and when cleaned out the river will once again show off its natural flora and fauna, which is currently hidden."

"The total cost of the project is €30,000, of which Louth LEADER provided €5,000, CLAR €10,000, Louth County Council €10,000 and Greenore Tidy Towns Ltd. €5,000. We feel that our project was particularly suitable for this scheme as, when completed, the walk requires little maintenance and the benefits will be long-term and significant for local residents and the wider community of Carlingford and Cooley."
